What is it?
The National Bank Travel Card is a reloadable prepaid MasterCard that holds foreign currency. Unlike a credit card, you're using your own money that has been pre-loaded onto your card. Because The National Bank Travel Card is a MasterCard® you can use your Travel Card online, over the phone and at millions of locations around the world.
What currencies is The National Bank Travel Card available in?
The National Bank Travel Card is available in four currencies – Australian Dollars, US Dollars, Euro or British Pounds.
What are the main benefits of The National Bank Travel Card?
The National Bank Travel Card is a convenient, cost-effective and secure way of taking money overseas:
- Because your card is preloaded with foreign currency, you're spending in the local currency of the country that you're travelling in. This makes it easier to budget and track your spending while you're travelling.
- When you load your National Bank Travel Card with foreign currency you're locking in the exchange rate, so you don't need to worry about the exchange rates fluctuating while you're overseas and you won't come home to unexpected bills and charges.
- The National Bank Travel Card is protected by chip technology, giving it an extra layer of protection by enforcing a PIN at chip-enabled retailers to help prevent fraud. For extra security and convenience we also give you a back up card just in case you lose the first card or it's stolen. You should keep them separate e.g. one in your wallet and the other with your luggage or in another safe place. Call us and we will cancel the card that you've lost but you can still use the other card to access your money.
What is the benefit of The National Bank Travel Card over Travellers' Cheques?
Like Travellers' Cheques, you can buy your foreign currency (Euro, British Pounds, American or Australian Dollars) before you leave – but instead of travelling with wads of paper based cheques, your foreign currency is loaded onto a card. This makes a Travel Card much more convenient than travellers' cheques because there's no need to ‘cash them in' at foreign exchange bureaus or banks while you're travelling – you just use your Travel Card wherever MasterCard is accepted electronically (it won't work with the old 'zip zap' machines).
How does the ‘chip' on the card work?
The ‘chip' is a new security feature, and enforces the use of a PIN at chip-enabled retailers. The main difference from cards that don't contain a chip is that you'll notice some retailers will insert the card in the EFTPOS terminal and keep it there while you enter your PIN and the transaction is processed.
